September marks an exciting milestone for Portaramp as we celebrate one year since the official launch of the Portaramp Aircraft Ramp.
What began as an idea to improve aircraft accessibility has developed into an international success story. Since launching in September 2025, the Aircraft Ramp has progressed from supporting passengers and ground-handling teams at major UK airports to undergoing global trials and reaching international markets. Today, Portaramp Aircraft Ramps are now being used by Qantas in Australia, representing another major step forward in the journey of a product designed and manufactured here in the UK.
The past 12 months have demonstrated what can be achieved through innovation, collaboration and a commitment to solving genuine accessibility challenges. As we celebrate the Aircraft Ramp's first anniversary, we're taking a look back at where the journey began, how far it has travelled and what comes next.
The Aircraft Ramp was born from a simple question: could Portaramp's decades of experience in accessible transport be applied to solve a challenge within aviation?
With more than 25 years of experience designing and manufacturing lightweight portable access ramps, particularly within the rail sector, Portaramp already understood the importance of creating solutions that balance accessibility, safety, durability and practical everyday use.
Working alongside ABM UK, that expertise was applied to the aviation environment.
The development process took approximately a year and involved close collaboration, prototypes and live aircraft trials. Feedback gathered throughout testing resulted in several important design refinements, including a narrower ramp width, additional rubber protection and modifications to accommodate different aircraft configurations.
The result was the Portaramp Aircraft Ramp: a lightweight, portable access solution developed around the realities of aircraft boarding and busy airport operations.
Following extensive development and testing, the Portaramp Aircraft Ramp officially launched in September 2025.
By the time of its introduction, the ramp had already undergone trials with major airlines and was entering service at UK airports including Manchester, Bristol, Liverpool, Stansted and Aberdeen.
The objective from the beginning was about more than simply introducing a new product.
The Aircraft Ramp was developed to help create a safer, smoother and more dignified boarding experience for passengers with reduced mobility, while also providing a practical solution for the teams responsible for passenger assistance and ground-handling operations.
Its launch represented an important moment for Portaramp, taking expertise developed over decades within accessible transport and applying it to an entirely new sector.
One year later, that journey has extended considerably further.

Following the successful UK launch, international interest in the Aircraft Ramp quickly began to grow.
Over the past year, Portaramp has had the opportunity to take the solution beyond the UK, with Aircraft Ramps reaching international markets and global trials helping demonstrate how the product can perform within different aviation environments.
Within six months of the official launch, Portaramp Aircraft Ramps had already reached the United States and the Netherlands, while interest continued to develop further afield.
These international opportunities have been an important part of the Aircraft Ramp's first year.
Different airports, airlines and ground-handling operations can present different accessibility and operational challenges. Taking the Aircraft Ramp into new environments provides an opportunity to understand those requirements, gather real-world feedback and demonstrate how the principles behind the solution can be applied internationally.
For Portaramp, global expansion isn't simply about sending a product overseas. It's about continuing to work with aviation organisations to understand the challenges they face and provide accessibility solutions that work in real operational environments.
One of the biggest milestones of the past 12 months has been the Aircraft Ramp's journey to Australia.
Earlier this year, Portaramp received its first Australian Aircraft Ramp order, marking another important step in the international growth of the solution.
That journey has continued, and today Portaramp Aircraft Ramps are being used by Qantas in Australia.
For a solution that began with sketches and prototypes in the UK, seeing the Aircraft Ramp now being used on the other side of the world represents an incredibly proud moment for everyone involved in the project.
Australia demonstrates the international potential of the Aircraft Ramp and represents another important development as Portaramp continues building its presence within the global aviation industry.
Most importantly, it shows how an accessibility challenge identified in one aviation environment can lead to a solution with relevance far beyond the UK.
An important part of developing the Aircraft Ramp was ensuring it could respond to the varied demands of modern aviation.
During the original development process, the ramp underwent live trials involving aircraft operated by Virgin Atlantic, easyJet, Emirates and Ryanair. These trials provided valuable insight into the practical challenges presented by different aircraft configurations.
Rather than designing the solution purely in a controlled environment, real-world testing allowed Portaramp and ABM UK to assess how the ramp would perform during actual airport operations.
Feedback led directly to design refinements and helped create a solution better suited to the demands placed upon equipment in busy aviation environments.
That same approach remains important as the Aircraft Ramp expands internationally. Every airport and operation can present different requirements, and Portaramp continues to work closely with aviation partners to ensure the most appropriate solution is provided for each application.
While reaching new countries and working with major aviation organisations are exciting milestones, the purpose behind the Aircraft Ramp remains the same as it was on day one: improving the passenger journey.
For passengers with reduced mobility, boarding and disembarking an aircraft can be one of the most challenging parts of air travel.
The transition between boarding infrastructure and the aircraft needs to be managed carefully, with accessibility, passenger comfort, safety and dignity all taken into consideration.
The Portaramp Aircraft Ramp was developed to help provide a smoother, more controlled transition for passengers requiring step-free access.
As the product reaches more aviation environments, that passenger-focused objective remains at the heart of its development.
Accessibility shouldn't simply be treated as an operational requirement. It's an important part of creating a travel experience in which every passenger can feel supported and confident throughout their journey.
Passengers aren't the only people who need to be considered when designing aviation accessibility equipment.
Ground-handling and passenger assistance teams work in complex, time-sensitive environments where equipment needs to be practical, dependable and straightforward to deploy.
That's why operational feedback played such an important role in developing the Aircraft Ramp.
Working alongside ABM UK provided Portaramp with valuable insight into the realities of airport operations. From handling and deployment to storage and compatibility with different aircraft environments, the solution could be developed with frontline use firmly in mind.
The result is an Aircraft Ramp designed not only around accessibility but also around the people responsible for delivering that accessibility every day.
The progress achieved over the past year wouldn't have been possible without collaboration.
From the earliest stages of development, Portaramp and ABM UK worked closely to combine two different areas of expertise.
Portaramp brought decades of experience in lightweight ramp design, bespoke engineering and accessible transport solutions. ABM UK brought extensive knowledge of aviation operations, passenger assistance and the practical challenges faced within airport environments.
Together, those perspectives helped turn an initial idea into a real-world aviation solution.
Live trials, operational feedback and continued refinement were essential throughout the process, demonstrating why some of the most effective innovations are created when manufacturers and end users work together.
The Aircraft Ramp's first anniversary comes during another particularly exciting period for Portaramp and ABM UK.
One year after its launch, the Aircraft Ramp Initiative has been shortlisted for three industry awards:
Aviation Industry Awards UK – Aviation Innovation Award
Operational Excellence Awards UK – Excellence in Collaboration and Partnership
Operational Excellence Awards UK – Innovation in Operations
The nominations recognise different aspects of the project, from the innovation behind the Aircraft Ramp itself to the collaborative approach that helped bring it to life and its application within real airport operations.
For Portaramp, receiving this industry recognition alongside the international growth of the Aircraft Ramp makes its first anniversary particularly special.
Although the Aircraft Ramp has only been officially available for one year, the knowledge behind it has been developed over decades.
Portaramp has more than 25 years of experience designing and manufacturing portable access solutions, with a particularly strong heritage within the rail industry.
Working with train operators, infrastructure organisations and transport providers has given our team extensive experience of solving complex accessibility challenges where standard products aren't always suitable.
That experience provided the foundation for our move into aviation.
Knowledge of lightweight materials, portable ramp technology, bespoke engineering and accessible passenger transport could be combined with specialist aviation insight to develop something specifically for aircraft environments.
The move from rail into aviation demonstrates how proven engineering knowledge can be adapted to address accessibility challenges across different forms of transport.
The Aircraft Ramp's first year has reinforced several important principles that have always shaped the way Portaramp approaches product development.
Listen to the People Using the Product: Real-world feedback is invaluable. Working directly with operational teams allows products to be developed around genuine requirements rather than assumptions.
Collaboration Creates Better Solutions: The partnership between Portaramp and ABM UK demonstrates what can happen when engineering expertise and operational knowledge are brought together around a shared challenge.
Accessibility Is a Global Challenge: From UK airports to the United States, the Netherlands and now Australia, the Aircraft Ramp's journey demonstrates that the need for practical, dignified accessibility solutions extends far beyond one country or transport network.
Innovation Doesn't Stop at Launch: Launching a product isn't the end of development. Every trial, deployment and conversation creates an opportunity to learn, refine and understand how accessibility equipment can better support passengers and operational teams.

The first 12 months have taken the Aircraft Ramp further than we could have imagined when the project began.
But this is only the beginning.
Portaramp will continue working with airports, airlines, ground-handling organisations and aviation partners to explore new opportunities, support international trials and develop solutions around the changing requirements of the industry.
As the Aircraft Ramp reaches new markets, we'll continue listening to operational teams, gathering feedback and applying the same problem-solving approach that has driven the project from the beginning.
Our ambition remains simple: to use our expertise to help make accessible travel safer, smoother and more dignified for passengers around the world.
From its official UK launch in September 2025 to international expansion, global trials, industry award nominations and Aircraft Ramps now being used by Qantas in Australia, it's been an extraordinary first year for the Portaramp Aircraft Ramp.
