• The gradient of an access ramp should not exceed 1:15.
• The width of an access ramp should not be less than 1500mm wide.
•  Handrails should contrast visually with the background against which it is seen
• The Vertical height from the pitch line of the ramp to the top of the upper handrail should be between 900mm and 1m and from the surface of landing should be between 900mm and 1100mm
• Ends of handrails should terminate in a way that reduces risk of clothing being caught
• The handrail profile should be circular with a diameter between 40mm and 45mm, alternatively the profile can be oval with a diameter of 50mm
• The surface material of an easy wheelchair access or ramp should offer good levels of grip under wet conditions to prevent slips or falls by wheelchair users or pedestrians using crutches or sticks for mobility assistance. It’s best practice to opt for non-slip materials such as anti-slip decking boards or rubber mats with small grooves or dimples that will provide extra grip even when wet or icy conditions are present.
• Landings must also be provided at regular intervals (at least every 10 metres) along an access ramp where changes in direction occur as well as at any points where a user might need additional time or space such as at doorways, steps or kerbsides etc.
• Wherever possible, edges of landings and changes in direction should be marked out clearly with contrasting colours so they can easily be identified by visually impaired users who may need guidance when navigating around obstacles such as steps or thresholds, etc.
• Turning circles must also be provided at regular intervals on ramps longer than 8m so wheelchair users can safely turn around at these sections without needing to reverse directions further down the slope - something which could cause them to lose balance and fall if done incorrectly due their limited maneuverability while on inclines compared with flat surfaces.
• Finally, any components used in the installation process such as fixings, bolts etc., must meet relevant British Safety Standards including BS EN ISO 9001-2015
